Family First Prevention Services Act (FFPSA)

The Family First Prevention Services Act (FFPSA), enacted in 2018, aims to transform the U.S. child welfare system by emphasizing prevention and family support. It provides funding for evidence-based prevention services for families at risk of entering the foster care system, such as mental health services, substance abuse treatment, and parenting skills programs. The act encourages keeping families together by reducing the need for out-of-home placements and places restrictions on federal funding for congregate care facilities, promoting family-like settings for children in foster care. Additionally, FFPSA fosters collaboration between child welfare agencies and community organizations to offer comprehensive support, while promoting an outcome-based approach that focuses on long-term solutions and positive outcomes for families and children. Overall, the act seeks to create a more supportive system that prioritizes prevention and family integrity.

Mandated Reporter –> Community Supporter

We’re excited to introduce a transformative shift in our approach to child and family support! This new model emphasizes building strong community connections and fostering nurturing environments. By transitioning from a role of mandated reporting to that of community supporter, we encourage collaboration and empower communities to proactively assist families and children.

This change focuses on enhancing protective factors, prioritizing prevention, and fostering trust and shared responsibility among community members. Together, we aim to strengthen the fabric of our community, benefiting everyone and promoting holistic well-being for families and children alike.

Building Community Pathways

Children and Family Services is investing in Unite Us to provide an effective platform for Community Pathway referrals (“Not in the System” referral system). Unite Us is a national organization that provides technology and local support to help communities connect people to the services they need. Our vision is to have the entire County on the platform as a way of easy and fast communication for support.

It will allow the County to connect children and their families to the services they need more quickly and efficiently, supporting the goals set forth in San Bernardino County’s Family’s First Comprehensive Prevention Plan. For more information, please visit their site: https://uniteus.com/
